Ossein

Ossein

The term “ ossein” originates from French and is a combination of “os” for bone and “ein” for protein.

Ossein is generally known to be the collagen component of bone. The main and exclusive use of Ossein is in the manufacture of gelatin.

The manufacturing process mainly involves leaching of crushed bones in Hydrochloric acid to separate the organic and inorganic portion in bones. The process involves the circulation of dilute hydrochloric acid in counter current fashion for a period of about 5-7 days at controlled temperature which is known as demineralization and also called as maceration.. Once this process of maceration is completed all that is left is the proteinaceous structural framework of the bone – i.e. “ossein” which is the main raw material for the production of gelatin.

Thus Obtained Ossein is insoluble in water which ultimately undergoes further processing and purification to become resultant product of gelatin. Moreover, Ossein itself is the finished product.
